About MRCP Part 1 Exam
What is MRCS Part A?
The MRCS (Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons) Part A is the first of two essential exams required to achieve membership of the Royal College of Surgeons. The subsequent exam is MRCS Part B, which is a practical, clinical assessment.
The MRCS Part A exam is designed to test your knowledge of the applied basic sciences and the principles of surgery in general. It is a critical step for those looking to progress in surgical training.
MRCS Part A Exam Format
The MRCS Part A examination consists of two papers, both taken on the same day. Each paper lasts three hours and contains multiple-choice questions (MCQs) that test candidates’ understanding of the surgical principles and applied basic sciences.
1. Paper 1 (Applied Basic Sciences) – This paper focuses on topics such as anatomy, physiology, and pathology, as well as other basic sciences relevant to surgery.
2. Paper 2 (Principles of Surgery in General) – This paper covers topics related to the general principles of surgery, such as perioperative management, trauma, wound healing, infection, and surgical techniques.
Each paper contains 180 ‘Single Best Answer’ questions, where you’ll find a list of five possible answers, but only one is correct. Each correct answer earns one mark, and like MRCP Part 1, there is no penalty for incorrect answers.
